What’s my story?

I was born in 1971 in a cozy town in the foothills of the German Alps. From a very early age on I was totally infatuated with America and everything American. I knew that one day I had to leave Germany behind and venture West. That time, I didn't know what inspired me deep down. I moved to San Francisco in 2005, started to work in Silicon Valley, and enjoyed living in California since. Today I would say the reason for this move was the 'American Mindset.' Thinking that everything is possible and can be done excites me and fuels my creativity daily.

I became interested in meditation and mindfulness practices when I was 25 and to this day remain grateful for the clarity, calm, and focus it has brought and still brings to my life. Over the past 20 years, my wife Laura and I managed different meditation centers and meditation retreat places in Frankfurt, Germany and San Francisco, California. We introduced hundreds of people to the basics of meditation and mindfulness.

Professionally, I’m the Co-Founder of digital yogis, a marketing boutique that helps entrepreneurs in health, wellness, yoga, and personal development to create online learning, online streaming, and online training programs. I’m also the Co-Founder of the Mindworks Meditation app, a new generation of meditation and mindfulness apps. Through this work, I've been fortunate to work and learn from some of the most inspiring leaders from companies, like adidas, Nike, Coca-Cola, Mercedes-Benz, Sony as well brilliant entrepreneurs and start-ups.

Bread, Beer, and Brats.

Recently, two things challenged my own beliefs, health, and well-being and inspired me to write this blog.

Being raised as a steadfast, soccer-loving Bavarian-German boy with an Italian grandfather, I grew up eating a diet based on mostly bread and pasta products combined with all kinds of cold cuts and sausages. Once I reached drinking age - that's 16 in Germany - I added steins of beer to the daily mix. Never questioning the impacts of this diet on my health, I continued this lifestyle when I moved to America and started working in the busy tech-world.

As work got more challenging and stressful, I realized that I had a hard time holding my concentration and focus. I always felt exhausted and tired and faulted my work-load for this. I was never the real skinny type, but once I reached my mid-thirties I gained over 30 pounds and carried around over 212 pounds at 5.8”.

Nothing really changed until my father passed away at the early age of 65. He had been battling heart disease and prostate cancer and just suddenly died of a blood clot.

That’s when I woke up and started questioning my health and diet. I thought that I have the same genetics and by following a similar diet and lifestyle to my fathers' might experience the same health challenges he had. I ventured out and found a Functional Medicine Doctor who ran a DNA test and a full blood panel. I found out that I cannot digest carbohydrates and sugars. Thanks to Dave Asprey and the Bulletproof Diet I adopted a high-fat, medium protein, low carb ketogenic diet. I lost 25 lbs within 12 months and completely reversed my high triglycerides, high cholesterol, and inflammation markers. I had so much more energy and felt that I had gained more mind power.

The Hijacked Mind

The other thing that I still struggled with and which actually got worse was my ability to hold my attention and focus.

Now more than ever, I felt that my mind had been hijacked!

I’ve started a daily meditation practice in 1996 when I was 25 years old and honestly, the quality of practice diminished over the last 22 years. I found myself on social media and the internet way more than I planned on. This led to shorter, fewer, and less deep meditation sessions and a significant decline in my productivity.

Even with all the new found well-being, the loss of connection to my inner-self and the feeling of the hijacked mind continued. If I were brutally honest, I would say that I was addicted to technology! Addicted to tiny dopamine highs that I received every time I went on Facebook, Instagram, Email, or Google.

If I wouldn’t always ask WHY I could have just said that this is the nature of your work and if you work digitally, this is just something that we all have to deal with. But as with my dietary changes, I believed that I could find similar solutions to fix the distraction with all its side-effects.

I started researching the physiological, psychological, and societal forces behind our digital addictions. I read many different books (which you will find in the Resources section), did some Digital Detox days and weekends, bought an old-school flip-phone, and tried to implement some new habits.

All of those things helped a little bit, but my entire technology addiction got really better once I've decided to move out of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Moving to San Diego

After living in the Bay Area and working in Silicon Valley for over 8 years, we moved to San Diego. One could ask why you would leave such an exciting area in the epicenter of innovation and technology paired with the beauty of Marin County and the Northern California Coastline when this is also the central area of your business? The main reasons were to shift the focus of our lives towards health and well-being and give our minds a break from the constant influx of new ideas, overstimulation of the nervous system, and the big desires to create the next big thing.

After a short period in San Diego, enjoying a bit slower pace and many days on the beach, the decision proved to be the right one. Shifting the emphasis in our lives has worked. I’ve lost even more weight, got even deeper into biohacking and have to admit that I never felt this good in my life. I also reclaimed back more of the connection to my inner-self. I understood what an important role my physical well-being played. I felt happier, more relaxed, slept better, had more fun, and more energy.

Concerning my tech addiction, I'm not saying you have to move from where you are, but in my case, the move was more a shift of emphasis in my life. Once I've decided that my health and well-being were more important it was much easier to give up the constant urge to stimulate myself with those tiny dopamine kicks throughout the day.

In this blog I will explore the impacts technology has on our well-being and if you read the Start here - Page you will understand why I think it's vital for us to re-establish and continuously nourish a deep connection to our authentic self.

I believe in the fundamental human intelligence, authentic joy, compassion, and wisdom and will dedicate my efforts to the growth of these qualities.
